Casting

A New Standard for Fan-Led Audio Drama

Doctor Who: Fractured Realities uses a casting model inspired by professional television and audio drama practices - adapted for remote production, spoiler control, and neurodivergent accessibility.

Every role is cast through a structured, fair, four-stage process designed to evaluate range, instinct, emotional intelligence, and adaptability.

No shortcuts. No guesswork. No arbitrary eliminations.

This page outlines exactly how casting works for all current and future roles.

Casting Philosophy

We believe in:

  • Fairness - everyone who provides audition sides is guaranteed evaluation

  • Clarity - expectations are explicit, instructions easy to follow

  • Respect - performers are guided, not left guessing

  • Accessibility - processes designed to support applicants with ASD, ADHD, anxiety, or limited time

  • Spoiler security - actors receive only the material they need

  • Professional growth - each audition stage actively helps actors improve

Casting for Fractured Realities is built on the principle that good storytelling begins with good communication.

The Casting Pipeline

A four-stage, data-driven, actor-friendly process.

1 - Baseline Audition - Sides Submission

Purpose: Establish a clean performance baseline.

All applicants who provide sides are evaluated.

Actors submit:

  • Prescribed audition sides for the character

  • Optional introduction (recommended)

  • Clean audio, raw or lightly treated

No eliminations are made at this stage. This is about listening, learning, and identifying potential threads.

2 -Baseline Chemistry & Performance Test

Purpose: Evaluate an actor's natural chemistry with the role and the story's emotional tone.

Actors receive:

  • Three short scenes

  • Micro-direction focused on tone, energy, pacing

We assess:

  • Intuition

  • Emotional authenticity

  • Ability to take direction

  • Suitability for the story world

Again, no eliminations - data only.

3 -Emotional Shift / Character Brain / Adaptive Range / Integration Test

Purpose: A deep dive into how the actor thinks and adapts.

Each packet includes:

  • A tailored micro-direction profile based on Stage 2

  • Scenes designed to challenge specific strengths & weaknesses

  • "Character Brain" questions testing psychological grasp

  • Integration prompts (e.g. interacting with Rowan or the Doctor)

  • Emotional shift exercises

Actors are not competing with each other here - they are revealing their interpretive intelligence.

This is where hidden strengths often emerge.

4 - Final Range & Interpretation Test

Purpose: Identify definitive casting matches.

Actors receive:

  • Three highly tailored scenes

  • Micro-direction pushing for precision and emotional truth

  • Five interpretive questions exploring character philosophy

  • Range tests (shifts in tone, subtlety, emotional weight)

Casting decisions made after this stage.

Every decision is made using:

  • Scoring

  • Notes

  • Comparative range

  • Fit within the ensemble

  • Ability to sustain a series arc

  • Adaptability to the Fractured Realities tone

Our Audition Environment

Because all performers record from home:

  • Scripts are delivered as lines-only to prevent leaks

  • Actors receive only what their character knows, nothing more

  • No actor sees the full script, except the showrunner

  • Sessions are fully asynchronous - work at your own pace

  • All feedback is private, clear, and constructive

This structure mirrors the secrecy protocols used in:

  • Doctor Who (modern era)

  • Marvel voice projects

  • Star Wars animated production

But adapted for remote fan-led work

Accessibility Commitment

We prioritise:

  • Clear deadlines with flexibility

  • Consistent communication

  • Breaks between audition packets

  • Easy-to-follow instructions

  • Neurodivergent-friendly formatting

  • Grace for actors managing work, school, or life circumstances

If an actor needs additional time or reduced workload, we accomodate without penalty.

How to Apply for Future Roles

When new roles open:

  • Submission instructions appear here and on social channels

  • Roles include a detailed description and voice reference

  • Sides will be downloaded directly

  • Applicants may apply from anywhere in the world

All applicants are acknowledged and processed in order received.

Remote Recording Requirements (Post-Casting)

For actors cast into the series:

  • USB or XLR microphone (Blue Yeti acceptable)

  • Quiet room / minimal echo

  • Ability to export WAV files

  • Consistency in microphone placement

Actors will record:

  • Episode lines in small batches

  • Out-of-order, based on character density

  • With spoilers kept to a minimum

A full Recording Guide is provided to cast after signing.

Fairness, Artistry & Privacy

We do not:

  • Publicly rank actors

  • Discuss unsuccessful applicants

  • Disclose private audition material

  • Share internal scoring

  • Release casting decisions early

We do:

  • Treat every audition with respect

  • Provide a transparent system

  • Maintain complete confidentiality
